β CONTENT WARNINGS. β
DP offers an unflinching glimpse into the normalized abuse and sexual assault that run rampant in virtually every military - and the ultimate psychological consequences of both. interaction with cpt. lim may involve mentions of canon beatings/violent physical abuse, sexual abuse of subordinates (not by him), suicidal ideation, and suicide. although lim doesn't encourage it, he's the executive officer to a general who not only does nothing to stop it but deliberately covers up violent abuse for the sake of optics, and he's complicit in that. ji-seop's character arc involves him, a career officer from the military academy, beginning to finally see that the army does nothing to address the grotesque abuse that pushes people to the breaking point of desertion or suicide and starting to act on his own free will as opposed to focusing on appearances and appeasement to advance in the bureaucracy.
until the end of season 1, however, lim ji-seop is a passive part of an unjust system. to quote the showrunner, "we are both the victims and the perpetrators": it's implied that he experienced similar physical and mental abuse as every other recruit, but he's never seen taking any initiative to resolve it when it happens under his command.
i write jiseop as a closeted gay man - in my opinion, it's strongly implied that he's attracted to other men based on his divorce, the crack about his limp wristedness in s1, his very, very close relationship with ssgt. na revealed in season 2, and a number of other details here and there. anything shippy comes with warnings for both internalized homophobia and possible references to the violent death of the implied romantic interest he's shown to harbor an immense amount of unresolved pain and grief over.
